Preparing for College

Planning for college can be an incredibly overwhelming experience. There are so many factors to consider including choosing the right school, entrance examinations, financial aid, scholarships, and career choices. Here is a selection of resources that will make the process a little less daunting.

The ThinkCOLLEGE® & Career Center, a program of Communities in Schools, is a FREE community based information and counseling Center open to all Charlotte-Mecklenburg students. Services include College application assistance, Financial aid application assistance, SAT, ACT and PSAT preparation, and scholarship searches

    This website is the primary gateway to help you plan, apply to, and pay for college in North Carolina.

    With links to over 100 North Carolina Colleges this site allows you to apply online, view information on college fairs, fill out a career questionnaire, take SAT and ACT practice tests and much more. Not ready to apply for college just yet? It’s a good idea to visit the site even if you've just started High School. It contains a student planner were you can create and keep a record of high school courses, activities, awards, and test scores to use on your applications. You can compare your high school courses with entrance requirements of colleges you are interested in attending.

    Register for the SAT online as well as view test dates and centers.
  • BLS Career Information
    Get information about careers you might like based on your favorite subjects in school.
  • FAFSA on the Web
    Students can apply online for federal student grants, work-study money and loans via this website.
  • The National Association for College Counseling
    An organization of 8,000 professionals from around the world dedicated to serving students as they make choices about pursuing post-secondary education. Provides information on National College Fair dates,locations, and exhibitors.

    This gateway to government information emphasizes planning for college, community service, and career development. Also includes information and links to the ROTC and Military Service.

    An interactive database with over 25 practice tests ranging from the GED & ASVAB to standardized exams for students and professionals.
